Sydney is tougher on exterior paint than most people realise. Strong UV most of the year, humid summers, salty air the closer you get to the coast, and sudden downpours — a budget paint that looks fine at handover can be chalking and fading within a couple of summers.
What premium paint actually buys you
The difference between a premium exterior paint and a budget one is mostly in the resin and pigment quality. Better resin means the paint film stays flexible as your home expands and contracts, resists UV breakdown, and holds dirt and mould off for longer. Better pigments mean the colour you chose is still the colour you see in eight years.
In practical terms, on a Sydney exterior we'd expect a premium system — proper prep, then quality primer and two topcoats of something like Dulux Weathershield — to look good for 10 years or more. A budget paint over the same prep often starts fading and chalking at year three or four. Repainting early costs far more than the paint you "saved".

When cheaper paint is fine
To be fair, there are places mid-range paint is perfectly sensible: a front fence you're happy to refresh every few years, or a rental being tidied up for sale. Indoors, premium washable paints still earn their keep in hallways and kids' rooms, but a low-traffic spare room can wear a mid-range paint happily for years.
