An exterior repaint on a single-storey brick or weatherboard home commonly runs $5,000 to $10,000, and two-storey homes go up from there because of access and scaffolding.
What actually moves the price
The biggest factor is preparation, not paint. A home that needs cracks filled, plaster repaired, mould treated or old peeling paint stripped back takes longer — and labour is most of any painting quote. Two houses with identical floor plans can be $2,000 apart purely on condition.
Other things that change a quote:
Ceiling heights and ornate cornices or trims (more cutting-in time)
Colour changes — dark to light usually needs an extra coat
Access: sloping blocks, tight side passages, two-storey work

How to compare quotes fairly
A cheap quote and a dear quote are rarely for the same job. Before comparing numbers, check each quote lists the same scope: which rooms, which surfaces, how many coats, what preparation is included, and which paint brand and line is being used. "Two coats of premium interior paint" is a different product to "paint walls" with no brand named.
