Hiring a painter should be simple. But anyone who has searched online or asked around knows the reality — quotes that vary wildly, promises that don't match the result, and finishes that peel within a year or two.
After nearly four decades painting homes and businesses across Blacktown and Western Sydney, we've seen every version of the good, the bad and the ugly. Here are the seven questions we recommend asking any painter before you commit — including us.
1. Are you licensed and insured?
In NSW, any painting job worth more than $5,000 must be done by a tradesperson holding a valid contractor licence. Ask for the licence number and check it yourself — ours is 253335C, and you can verify it on the NSW Fair Trading register in under a minute.
Insurance matters just as much. Public liability cover protects you if something goes wrong on your property. Any reputable painter will confirm this without hesitation.
2. Are you accredited by a paint manufacturer?
Manufacturer accreditation is one of the strongest signals of quality in the painting industry. A Dulux Accredited painter, for example, has been independently vetted for workmanship, professionalism and customer service — and is held to ongoing standards, not just a one-off check.
It also means the painter uses premium products and knows how to apply them properly. A warranty is only as good as the product underneath it.
3. Is your quote detailed and written?
A verbal quote scribbled on a business card is a red flag. A professional quote should clearly state:
- The surfaces to be painted and the preparation work included
- The number of coats and the specific products being used
- The warranty terms in writing
- The timeline and payment schedule
Vague quotes lead to disputes. Detailed quotes lead to finished jobs.
4. Who actually does the work?
Some painting companies win the job, then send whoever is available. Ask whether the people doing the work are employees of the business or subcontractors, and whether they are police-checked and experienced.
A long-established local crew has a reputation to protect in the community — that accountability is worth a lot.
5. How do you handle preparation?
Here's the truth about painting: the finish is only as good as the preparation underneath it. Ask specifically what preparation is included — pressure washing, sanding, filling, priming, sealing gaps.
If a quote seems surprisingly cheap, preparation is usually what got cut. And it's exactly where corners show, within a year or two, in the form of peeling, cracking and uneven coverage.
6. What warranty do you offer — and what does it actually cover?
Many painters say they "guarantee their work." The important question is: in writing, for how long, and covering what?
We back every job with a 5-year workmanship warranty, with full terms provided with every written quote. Whatever painter you choose, make sure the warranty is documented before work begins — not promised afterwards.
7. Can I see recent local work and reviews?
A painter with a genuine local history will have no shortage of completed jobs nearby and reviews you can read. Look for recent, specific feedback on Google — not just a handful of testimonials from years ago, hand-picked for the website.
We're proud of our reviews across Blacktown and Western Sydney, and we encourage every potential customer to read them before deciding.
The short version
The best painters make it easy to check their credentials, put everything in writing, explain their preparation process, and stand behind their work for years — not months. If a quote feels rushed or vague, it usually is.
