Good preparation is what separates a paint job that lasts ten years from one that's peeling in two. Most of the technical prep is our job — but there's plenty you can do beforehand that saves time on the day and keeps your quote down.
What you can do before we arrive
Clear the walls. Take down pictures, clocks, mirrors and wall-mounted shelves. Small nails can stay if you want the same items back in the same spots — otherwise pull them out and we'll fill the holes.
Move furniture to the middle. A metre of clear space around every wall is ideal. We supply drop sheets and plastic, but the less furniture against walls, the faster we start.
Give walls a gentle clean. Kitchens especially — cooking film stops paint sticking properly. Warm water with a little sugar soap, then a rinse, does the job. Bathrooms benefit too.
Flag anything you're worried about. Cracks that keep coming back, damp patches, or a stain that's bled through before — point them out at the start. Some stains need a stain-blocking primer or they will reappear through any number of topcoats.
What to leave to us
Please don't fill cracks or sand patches yourself unless you're confident — poorly filled spots show through as shadows in certain light, and we often have to redo them. Filling, sanding, gap-sealing trim, treating mould and priming are all part of a proper quote from us.
Pets and kids
Painting days go smoothest with a plan for the little ones. Wet paint and curious hands (or paws) mix badly, and doors will be open as we move in and out. A closed-off room or a day with the grandparents works wonders.
